The show by Damiano Michieletto begins like a train journey, announced from the public-address speakers: “Your attention please, the express train 393 from Florence to Seville is departing from platform five”.
A delightful way to travel through Rossini’s opera, evoking places and situations though fantasy. Bizarre costumes and bright colours make the characters entertaining: Don Basilio is bright green, with long greasy hair, hooked nose, as green as a snake with envy ; Figaro has hair styled like a wolf’s ears, and whiskers, while Don Bartolo, all in white, looks like a fat bulldog jealously guarding Rosina, dressed in red like her lover Lindoro. The absence of sets concentrates all of the audience’s attention on the comical gags and the studied gestures, but above all on the voices and music, sovereign in Rossini’s opera.
